Neurodegenerative Disorders

Neurodegenerative disease is one of the fastest growing conditions in the older population within the United States. Neurodegenerative disease is a general term for many different conditions which affect the neurons or connections within the brain or spinal cord. Degenerative nerve diseases affect many of your body’s activities, such as balance, movement, talking, breathing, and autonomic function.

Neurodegenerative diseases are commonly seen as incurable, yet, many can experience a reduction in their symptomatology, a slowing of their progression and improved function with appropriate neurorehabilitative care. Due to the progressive degeneration of neuronal cells, the patient may develop movement disorders, tremors, ataxia, or decreases in mental functioning known as dementia. Dementia is currently the most commonly seen result of neurodegenerative diseases. The most common neurodegenerative diseases are Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s.  Today, 5 million Americans suffer from Alzheimer’s disease; 1 million from Parkinson’s; 400,000 from multiple sclerosis (MS); 30,000 from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS or Lou Gehrig’s disease), and 30,000 from Huntington’s disease. These rates are expected to rise drastically, with predictions showing 1 in 5 Americans will suffer from one of these conditions.

At Neurolink Chiropractic we offer specific treatment programs based on a neurological workup to help manage and support these conditions.
